Sky View Photography was formed at the start of 2015 after owner/operator Andrew Underwood saw the possibility to combine a passion for photography, his RC hobby flying background along with real world aviation expertise as an active commercial pilot.
Having previously flown Aeryon SkyRanger quadcopter UAV’s in the survey industry, the development of CA Rule Part 101 had brought to light the impending requirement for a recognised qualification to be held by UAV operators wishing to fly unshielded within 4km radius of the many airports and heliports within Auckland City.
This helped Sky View gain traction, using consumer level DJI quadcopters and a small team of CPL holders to provide high resolution still and moving imagery to clients within the real estate, construction, agriculture and tourism industries.
Some highlights for the company thus far have included the first commercial drone operation on the beautifully remote Chatham Islands, an invite to capture the 2016 Splore art and music festival from flying camera, along with plenty of complimentary vino received from the various vineyard shoots around the upper North Island!
Now in their second year of business, Sky View have earned their place as one of the go to providers of aerial imagery in the region and have begun expanding their scope into large scale orthomosaic mapping, unlocking the potential of off the shelf hardware with powerful data collection and post processing techniques.
Andrew has also joined FlightTest NZ as a Part 141 UAV examiner and conducts classroom theory and practical tuition for new drone operators through a partnership with Aviation Safety Management Systems Ltd.
